Observances of the Father’s Day holiday in June often fall somewhat short of the grand celebrations planned for May’s big Mother’s Day festivities. As a father of two, I’m glad we took time this month to give dads their due. I particularly enjoyed our “Stay-At-Home Heroes” feature, which calls attention to the growing trend of fathers taking on the role of primary caregiver. It’s a phenomenon that is more and more common in the modern family structure. If you’re searching for that perfect gift for dad, check out the many Father’s Day gift ideas in our Wellington Shopper article. Father’s Day is also the theme of our Wellington Table feature this month as three generations of Wellington’s Priore family dined at the Bamboo Club.

Polo is a full-contact sport, and no one knows that better than rising polo star Jeff Blake. Owner of Wellington’s Pine Tree Farm, Blake — the subject of this month’s cover feature — has his share of scars. But he has also amassed an impressive string of honors, such as the MVP award from this year’s U.S. Open final. The regional musical sensation Hot Brass Monkey, led by Wellington’s own Jody Marlow, is profiled this month, as is ballroom dancewear designer Deirdre Baker of Deirdre of London.

Also this month, the Automobile Association of America, better known as AAA, may be famous for its roadside assistance services, but it is also a growing force in the greater travel industry. Just in time for the summer travel season, we explore how AAA Travel can help you plan a budget-conscious family vacation. Wellington Style checks in with Michele Giardino at Lorelle Marie Salon, expert in a unique hair-straightening technique. Wellington at Home visits the Southwest-inspired home of Elaine and David Ozarow featuring a treasure trove of handmade furnishings.

When you pick up a copy of this month’s printed edition, be sure to check out our special Summer Gold advertising section following page 50. In these difficult economic times, we’re grateful for the dozens of loyal advertisers and newfound friends who continue to show their faith in Wellington The Magazine.

Finally, on a personal note, this month marks the one-year anniversary of my dear wife Cathie’s passing. Not a day goes by that she’s not in my thoughts and my heart. As many of my friends, co-workers and family know, this has not been a great year for me. It is just recently that I have been able to work through the bereavement process. Thanks to all for the help, support and understanding shown to me and my family this past year.
